The Neighbourhood Network (NN) is charity supporting Neighbourhood Watch type groups in Hull. The charity has been operating since 2011 and works closely with the local community safety partner and the other support organisations in the Humberside force area, as part of the wider Humber Watch Association. The Neighbourhood Network’s small team consists of job share Charity Managers and part-time Charity Support Officer.

The charity provides support to new groups to set up along with long tern sustainable support and development for all its members, with one such aspect being the provision of training. Before the Covid-19 pandemic the Neighbourhood Network had scheduled in some classroom style cybercrime awareness training for its members and wider communities with Humberside Police’s Cyber Prevent/Protect officer. However, due to social distancing this has to be cancelled in the first instance.

It wasn’t long into lockdown that a decision was made with Humberside Police to continue with the awareness sessions, but using the Zoom online platform. The first session on cybercrime awareness was held on 21st April and we’ve gone on to host a further 6 of these successful awareness sessions. We’ve also added additional titles to the Zoom series under the banner of ‘Keep Connected’ working with other partner organisations. The other sessions offered to members and the wider communities include:

  • Cybercrime: How to keep young people safe online
  • Neighbourhood Watch and wildlife with Yorkshire wildlife expert
  • Crime prevention
  • Neighbourhood Watch and social media
  • Cybercrime: Hackers and social engineering
  • Allotment security

To celebrate Neighbourhood Watch Week the Neighbourhood Network offered an online Zoom session Monday – Friday and had over 70 people attend throughout the week.

We’re really proud of how we have adapted to continue our support of our members in recent times, continuing to provide access to learning for safer and healthier lives. We’ve organised and hosted 16 Zoom sessions thus far, with over 230 attendees. We have new sessions coming soon to include Fraud and Cancer Awareness. These sessions are open to all, just email the team for the link to join in.

The session was very interactive and very worthwhile.

The session I attended on cybercrime awareness was absolutely excellent and I'd recommend it strongly to everyone. A really useful presentation and I hope lots more people get to hear it in the future.

It was useful to learn if your email address was breached and checking your passwords. I thought the padlock meant safety. I don't use free wi-fi, but shocking to learn about potential access to your data - very well presented by PC Kennedy and easy to understand.

I have attended a few of these sessions and they have all been very professional, informative and easy to use. This is a great service which is much needed - thank you for putting on these important sessions.
